Integrating SCVMM 2008 with SCOM 2007: Step-by-Step Setup Guide
Integrating System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) 2008 with System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) 2007 unlocks Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO). This integration enables automated, health-driven management of your virtual infrastructure. Follow this step-by-step guide to connect both environments successfully. Prerequisites
Before beginning, ensure your environment meets these structural requirements:
SCOM 2007 Agent: Installed on the SCVMM 2008 Management Server.
SCOM 2007 Authoring Console: Installed on the SCVMM 2008 Management Server (required for PRO tip configuration).
SCOM Operations Console: Installed on the SCVMM 2008 Management Server.
SCVMM 2008 Admin Console: Installed on the SCOM 2007 Root Management Server (RMS).
Permissions: Windows Administrator and SCOM Administrator rights on all targeted servers.
Step 1: Install the Windows PowerShell Virtualization Management Library
SCOM needs access to SCVMM cmdlets to discover and monitor virtualization topology. Log into your SCOM Root Management Server. Run the SCVMM 2008 installation wizard. Select Install VMM Administrator Console.
Complete the wizard to install the console and underlying PowerShell snap-ins. Step 2: Import the SCVMM 2008 Management Packs
You must import the dedicated SCVMM management packs into SCOM to monitor virtual machines and hosts. Open the SCOM 2007 Operations Console. Navigate to the Administration pane.
Right-click Management Packs and select Import Management Packs. Click Add, then select Add from disk.
Browse to the SCVMM 2008 installation media directory: \ManagementPacks. Select and import these vital files: Microsoft.SystemCenter.VirtualMachineManager.2008.mp Microsoft.SystemCenter.VirtualMachineManager.PRO.Library.mp Click Install to finish the import process. Step 3: Configure the Connection in SCVMM
Link the SCVMM server directly to your SCOM management group. Open the SCVMM 2008 Administrator Console. Click on the Administration view in the left pane.
Select System Center Settings and double-click Operations Manager Settings.
Enter the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) of your SCOM Root Management Server.
Select Use a local SYSTEM account or specify a dedicated execution account.
Check the box to Enable Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO) if you want automated workload balancing. Click OK to initialize the bidirectional connection. Step 4: Verify the Integration
Confirm data is flowing between both System Center components. Open the SCOM 2007 Operations Console. Navigate to the Monitoring workspace. Look for the Virtual Machine Manager folder.
Verify that your Hyper-V or VMware hosts, virtual machines, and SCVMM engine display a Healthy status. To help refine this infrastructure setup, tell me:
