Mastering Stereo Width: Blue Cat’s Widening Parametr’EQ Guide

Blue Cat’s Widening Parametr’EQ is a 7-band parametric Mid/Side (M/S) equalizer plugin designed to manipulate the stereo field by expanding or narrowing specific frequency ranges. It extends the core algorithms of Blue Cat Audio’s standard Parametr’EQ line to offer specialized multi-band stereo widening and narrowing. Core Architecture and Features

7-Band Parametric Design: It contains seven fully customizable frequency bands that bridge the digital and analog worlds.

Analog/Digital Hybrid Algorithm: The plugin features non-linearities and oversampling to accurately simulate the subtle compression and harmonic distortion found in high-end analog hardware. Alternatively, you can disable these settings for clean, transparent digital processing.

Independent Mid/Side Processing: The plugin splits audio into Mid (center/mono) and Side (stereo stereo-width) channels. Each matrix functions as an independent equalizer with real-time frequency response curves.

Virtual Center Selection: Unlike rigid M/S processors, it allows you to dynamically shift the position of the virtual center for the M/S matrix. This gives you precise control over exactly where equalization occurs in the stereo panoramic field. Multi-Band Stereo Widening or Narrowing

When configured in its “Mirroring” link mode, the plugin translates standard EQ boosts or cuts directly into spatial changes.

Pushing a band’s cursor up shifts energy into the Mid channel, narrowing that frequency range toward the center.

Pulling a band’s cursor down balances energy into the Side channel, widening that specific frequency range across the stereo field. Workflow and Performance Features

WYSIWYG Graph Interface: The interface shows a real-time, calculated visual representation of the processing curve, allowing you to monitor modifications instantly.

Skinnable User Interface: True to Blue Cat Audio’s product architecture, the layout and behavior can be completely redesigned using custom or third-party skins.

Zero Latency & Zipper-Free Controls: The plugin operates with zero latency, making it safe for live tracking or real-time automation. The processing engine features smooth control response curves to eliminate “zipper noise” when sweeping parameters.

Advanced Automation: Every parameter can be controlled in real time using DAW host automation or mapped to external MIDI CC controllers.
