RECMP3 Audio Recorder

Converting a REC file to MP3 requires identifying what type of REC file you have, as .rec is a generic “recording” extension used by different devices and software for both video and audio. Voice recorders (like those from Sony or Philips) typically save audio-only REC files, while PVRs, TV set-top boxes, and screen recorders use REC to save video files with embedded audio tracks.

Because of these differences, the best tool and method depend on whether your source file is audio-only or a video recording.

Option 1: Using Free Audio Software (For Audio-Only REC Files)

If your REC file is a pure audio voice recording, specialized audio conversion software can strip away the proprietary wrapper and encode it as a high-quality MP3.

Switch Audio Converter: Download and launch Switch Audio Converter. Click the green Add File(s) button to load your REC files (or drag and drop them). Set the output format dropdown to .mp3 and click Convert.

Audacity: Download the free, open-source editor Audacity. Drag your file into the window. Go to File > Export > Export as MP3. (Note: You may need to download the optional FFmpeg library plugin within Audacity settings if it fails to read your specific REC file format).

Option 2: Using VLC Media Player (For Video or TV REC Files)

If your REC file is a video file or a recording taken from a TV top-box, VLC Media Player is the most reliable free desktop solution because it can handle heavy video transcoding and extract just the audio.

Open Media Tool: Open VLC, click Media in the top left, and choose Convert / Save.

Add Your File: In the File tab, click Add…, select your .rec file, and click Convert / Save.

Choose MP3 Profile: Under the Settings section, find the Profile dropdown menu. Scroll down to choose Audio – MP3.

Set Destination: Click Browse at the bottom to pick your output folder. Give your file a name and type .mp3 manually at the very end of the file name.

Convert: Click Start. The progress bar at the bottom will track the extraction process.

Option 3: Using Web-Based Converters (No Installation Required)

If you only have one or two small files and do not want to download software, secure online cloud converters can process the files inside your web browser.

Online Audio Converter: Navigate to Online Audio Converter. Click Open file to upload your REC recording. Select mp3 as your target format, choose your quality setting, and click Convert.

CloudConvert: Visit CloudConvert MP3 Converter. Click Select File, choose your REC file, ensure the “Convert to” field says MP3, and click the red Convert button.
